Three Tips on How to Score a Band 6 Essay
As a previous senior English HSC marker, here are Mr John Wilkie's 3 top tips on how to score a Band 6 essay:
1. Focus on the question: The best responses identify the key words in the question. Make sure that your essay is structured in a way allows you to consistently refer to those key words. 2. Clarity of expression: This can only be developed by reading widely. Read critical essays, reviews in newspapers and essay-style writing on the topic area to not only strengthen your vocabulary but broaden your understanding of the critical issues in the topic. 3. Know the text: The style of questions examined in the HSC demand flexibility; a prearranged answer will not perfectly address the question. You need to know the text and demonstrate this knowledge through the use of strong textual evidence to support your arguments.
